Greece: information for travelers

DISCOVER GREECE

Greece is a country of sea and mountains, ancient ruins, and white island villages. For travelers, it offers straightforward logistics, great food, a warm climate, and a wide choice of vacation formats — from beaches and yachting to trekking and museums.

Where it is and how it’s laid out

The main territory is on the Balkans (Athens, Thessaloniki, Peloponnese), plus thousands of islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas (Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, etc.). This matters for planning: flights/ferries between the mainland and the islands take time.

When to go

  • Ideal (mild weather, fewer people): April–June, September–October.

  • Peak heat: July–August (high prices, many tourists, very hot).

  • Winter: +10…+16 °C on the mainland, part of the resort infrastructure is closed.

Entry and documents

  • Passport and travel health insurance.

  • For some nationalities — a Schengen visa (Greece is in the Schengen Area). Check your specific requirements.

How to get there and get around

  • Main airports: Athens (ATH), Thessaloniki (SKG), Heraklion (HER), Chania (CHQ), Rhodes (RHO), Santorini (JTR), Corfu (CFU).

  • Between islands: ferries (Blue Star, Minoan, Seajets) and domestic flights (Aegean/Olympic, Sky Express).

  • On the mainland: car rental (convenient for Peloponnese, Epirus, Thessaly), KTEL buses, Hellenic Train routes (Athens–Thessaloniki, etc.).

  • In cities: Athens has metro/tram/buses, taxis, and taxi apps.

Where to go: quick orientation

  • Athens: Acropolis, museums, gastronomy. 2–3 days are enough.

  • Peloponnese: Mycenae, Nafplio, Ancient Olympia, beautiful coastline.

  • North (Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Meteora): cliff-top monasteries, beaches of the Kassandra/Sithonia peninsulas.

  • Crete: a large “all-in-one” island: beaches, mountains, Minoan ruins.

  • Cyclades (Santorini, Naxos, Paros): postcard views, volcanic landscapes, beaches.

  • Ionian Islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos): green islands, emerald sea.

  • Rhodes/Dodecanese: fortresses, old towns, stable weather and a long season.

Beaches and sea

Beaches are sandy or pebbly, and the water is clean almost everywhere. For the “postcard” spots (Balos, Elafonisi, Navagio, Red Beach Santorini), arrive early in the morning or toward sunset — fewer people and better photos.

What to see (beyond the sea)

  • Antiquity: Acropolis, Delphi, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Knossos.

  • Nature: Samaria Gorge (Crete), Meteora, Mount Olympus.

  • Cities: old districts of Athens (Plaka, Psiri), port promenades of Chania/Rethymno, medieval Rhodes.

Food & drinks: what to try

Greek cuisine is simple and high-quality — fresh ingredients and olive oil.

  • Classics: souvlaki, moussaka, gyros, Greek salad.

  • Regional: dakos (Crete), snails, xinomizithra/graviera, manouri, pastitsio.

  • Sweets: loukoumades, baklava.

  • Drinks: Greek wine, tsipouro/raki, ouzo, Greek coffee (order “metrio” — medium sweetness).

Budget & payments

  • Cards accepted almost everywhere; small expenses — cash (euro).

  • Price range: street food €3–6; taverna €12–20 per person; car rental €30–60/day outside peak season.

Accommodation

  • Hotels, apartments, boutique guesthouses. On the islands, book July–August early. For quiet — choose second line from the sea and smaller villages.

Practical tips & safety

  • Sun: SPF 30+, hat, water always with you.

  • Meltemi wind (summer, Aegean Sea): can be cool and windy — check forecasts.

  • Parking: limited in old town centers — plan ahead.

  • Healthcare: travel insurance; in major cities — pharmacies and clinics everywhere.

  • Water: often bottled on islands; on the mainland sometimes drinkable from the tap — check locally.

Useful phrases

  • Hello — Γεια σας (Yássas)

  • Please/Thank you — Παρακαλώ / Ευχαριστώ (Parakaló / Efharistó)

  • How much is it? — Πόσο κάνει; (Póso káni?)

  • Where is…? — Πού είναι…; (Poú íne?)

  • The bill, please — Λογαριασμό, παρακαλώ (Logariasmó, parakaló)
