A medieval fortress perched on a cliff above the Chaya River in the Rhodope Mountains, near the town of Asenovgrad. Its main symbol is the well-preserved Church of the Holy Mother of God (12th–13th c.) with frescoes and viewing terraces. The name comes from the inscription of Tsar Ivan Asen II (1231), noting the restoration of the fortifications.

The fortress is compact yet rich in highlights: with one climb you’ll see the main church, Rhodope panoramas, fortress ruins, and original inscriptions that anchor the site to the history of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Start with the church, then walk along the walls to the viewpoints, and finish near the rock relief with the tsar’s inscription.-
